Men and women so estranged in the USA by Calvin C. Hernton

There are terrible economic, racist, and sexual forces in the United States that have given the black woman a depraved concept of herself and have made her a “difficult” person to deal with. And contrary to what “nationalistic” blacks assert, there are black women just as there are white women – in America who are physically and psychologically almost impossible to bear in an intimate heterosexual relationship. If I were asked for counsel, I would advise black women – indeed, everyone in America to work for the obliteration of those forces in our society and culture that not only frustrate black men and women, but set the sexes at odds with each other in general. As Pearl Buck has lamented, nowhere in the world are men and women so estranged as in the United States.

Calvin C. HerntonSex And Racism in America (1965), Anchor Books , 1992, NYC, p. 143

Racism of sex distort human conscience by Calvin C. Hernton

Most of all, I do not see how men, wonen, and children can grow and live healthy, productive lives in a world where even if all other forms of racism and Jim Crow have disappeared the racism of sex still prevails to plague, to distort, and to deprave the human conscience of blacks and whites alike.

Calvin C. Hernton, Sex And Racism in America (1965), Anchor Books , 1992, NYC, p. 183

Race : inextricably connected with sex by Calvin C. Hernton

What does all of this mean? It means that the race problem is inextricably connected with sex. More and more in America, everything we make, sell, handle, wear, and do takes on a sexual meaning.

Calvin C. Hernton, Sex And Racism in America (1965), Anchor Books , 1992, NYC, p.3

They make no use of the new knowledge by Sigmund Freud

The reader is ‘stimulated’ only by those passages which he feels apply to himself — that is, which concern conflicts that are active in him at the time. Everything else leaves him cold. We can have analogous experiences, I think, when we give children sexual enlightenment. I am far from maintaining that this is a harmful or unnecessary thing to do, but it is clear that the prophylactic effect of this liberal measure has been greatly over-estimated. After such enlightenment, children know something they did not know before, but they make no use of the new knowledge that has been presented to them. We come to see that they are not even in so great a hurry to sacrifice for this new knowledge the sexual theories which might be described as a natural growth and which they have constructed in harmony with, and dependence on, their imperfect libidinal organization-theories about the part played by the stork, about the nature of sexual intercourse and about the way in which babies are made. For a long time after they have been given sexual enlightenment they behave like primitive races who have had Christianity thrust upon them and who continue to worship their old idols in secret.

Sigmund Freud, “Analysis Terminable and Interminable” (1937), Standard Edition Vol XXIII, Trans. James Strachey, The Hogarth Press, London, 1964, pp. 223 – 234

Accomplished with what we lack by William Shakespeare

Act 3, Sc. 4 – PORTIA
They shall, Nerissa; but in such a habit,
That they shall think we are accomplished
With that we lack. I’ll hold thee any wager,
When we are both accoutred like young men,
I’ll prove the prettier fellow of the two,
And wear my dagger with the braver grace,
And speak between the change of man and boy
With a reed voice, and turn two mincing steps
Into a manly stride, and speak of frays
Like a fine bragging youth, and tell quaint lies,
How honourable ladies sought my love,
Which I denying, they fell sick and died;
I could not do withal; then I’ll repent,
And wish for all that, that I had not killed them;
And twenty of these puny lies I’ll tell,
That men shall swear I have discontinued school
Above a twelvemonth. I have within my mind
A thousand raw tricks of these bragging Jacks,
Which I will practise.
– NERISSA
Why, shall we turn to men?

William ShakespeareMerchant of Venice, Folger Shakespeare Library, London, p. 131 – 132

Voulant, tout, ne les avoir pas tuées;
– NERISSA
Quoi, on va être mises?…
En hommes?

Humiliation is produced by the gaze of the other by Michel Zink

The humiliation of love or sexual humiliation, we have not ceased to meet it: humiliation of the race of the adulterers, humiliation of the crazy one of love, humiliation of the one who accepts the dishonor for love, humiliation of the fool fooled by girls, of the impotent old man, of the ugliness that forbids to please, of the deceived lover, of the scorned husband, of the sodomite, of the violated woman. Humiliation of the stripped victim, so that any suffering and any outrage are for her the equivalent of a rape. All the paths of humiliation lead to sexual humiliation, unless they start from it. All humiliation is rape, the exposure and penetration of an intimacy that should be preserved. Why is this surprising? Humiliation is produced by the gaze of the other.

All humiliation is a form of rape by Michel Zink

Rape, present in all armed conflicts, systematically practiced by the Red Army during the Second World War and today on an unimaginable scale in certain conflicts in Africa and by the Islamic State in the Near East, is the quintessence of humiliation. Because humiliation is linked to sexuality. It is an exposure, an aggression of the intimate. It is felt in the belly. All humiliation is a form of rape.

Some have offered their ears for hire by Michel Foucault

Ours is, after all, the only civilization in which officials are paid to listen to all and sundry impart the secrets of their sex: as if the urge to talk about it, and the interest one hopes to arouse by doing so, have far surpassed the possibilities of being heard, so that some individuals have even offered their ears for hire.

Michel Foucault, “We “Other Victorians”” in The History of Sexuality Volume I : An Introduction, Trans. Robert Hurley, Pantheon Books New York, 1978, p. 7

Shame of homosexuality and general shame by Jean-Pierre Martin

Is the internalized shame of homosexuality not the specific manifestation of a more general shame towards any form of sexuality as an exacerbated feeling of a body delivered in spite of itself to the other – irruption of a hitherto unknown drive, discovery of the other inside oneself ?

Shame and the mother’s eye by Jean Guillaumin

In guilt, “the child” is caught by the father in the act of wanting to fulfill a forbidden sexual desire with the mother and he seeks forgiveness by acknowledging his fault. In shame, the father‘s eye that surprises is a bit that of the mother herself who sees and denounces in the desire that aims at her the anal drive, camouflaged under the effort of idealized phallic seduction.

Sexuality cannot be summarily made or unmade by Judith Butler

For sexuality cannot be summarily made or unmade, and it would be a mistake to associate “constructivism” with “the freedom of a subject to form her/his sexuality as s/he pleases.” A construction is, after all, not the same as an artifice. On the contrary, constructivism needs to take account of the domain of constraints
without which a certain living and desiring being cannot make its way.

Judith ButlerBodies That Matter – On the Discursive Limits of SexRoutledge, 1993, p.94

A woman is always naked by Otto Weininger

To be ashamed of something, one must be aware of it, and like consciousness, differentiation is necessary to feel the shame. The woman, who is only sexual, may appear on the contrary asexual, because she is the sexuality itself, in her, the sexuality does not stand out from the rest as it is the case with men, neither physically, nor psychically, nor in space, nor in time : the woman, who is constantly indecent, can give the impression of deccency, because she has no decency to be hurt. And so , the woman is never naked or always is : never, because she never really reaches the real feeling of nudity; always, because it lacks precisely the element other, the difference itself, the only one which could make her aware of her objective nudity, and thus encourage her to cover and hide it. That one can be naked even covered with a garment is certainly something that escapes the untrained gaze, but a psychologist would make a bad advertisement for himself concluding from the clothing to the non-nudity. A woman is always naked, even under the crinoline and the corset.

Women are insensitive to genius by Otto Weininger

Many people who are quick to be dazzled and especially women also believe that being genius means having wit. Whatever they seem, women are insensitive to genius; having only sexual ambitions, it does not matter to them by what a man will be distinguished externally from the common men[…]

The woman is only sexual by Otto Weininger

The woman is only sexual, the man is also sexual: this distinction is of considerable importance, as well in space as in time.

The woman’s being is entirely sexual by Otto Weininger

The state of sexual arousal represents for the woman the highest point to which she can reach. The woman’s being is entirely sexual. Sexual life, the sphere of copulation and reproduction, which includes the relation to man and child, absorbs F entirely, fills its existence, while H, while being sexual, is still something else. This is, trully speaking, that difference we wanted to see in the intensity of instinct.

Bisexuality as a universal rule by Otto Weininger

There is between man and woman (with some nuances, it’s true to all living beings with sexual reproduction), an infinity of gradations, an infinity of “intermediate sexual forms”. Just as physics reasons on ideal gases, in other words gases rigorously obeying Boyle-Gay-Lussac’s law (while none actually obey to it), and starts from this law to see how reality differs from it, in the same way, we must posit here H as an ideal man and F as an ideal woman, without attributing to them either a real existence which they do not have, but as sexual types. Such types not only can but must be built. The type, the Platonic idea, is the object of science as it is that of art. Fully conscious that reality offers no example of this, physics studies perfectly elastic or perfectly rigid bodies, using real bodies only as starting points in its search for type and defining them in return as mixed cases. Likewise, there are really only combinations of masculine and feminine, approximations of these two types, unobservable as such. Let me be understood correctly: I am speaking here not of a bisexuality as an exception, or as an embryonic disposition, but of the bisexuality as a universal rule.
