Men and women so estranged in the USA by Calvin C. Hernton

There are terrible economic, racist, and sexual forces in the United States that have given the black woman a depraved concept of herself and have made her a “difficult” person to deal with. And contrary to what “nationalistic” blacks assert, there are black women just as there are white women – in America who are physically and psychologically almost impossible to bear in an intimate heterosexual relationship. If I were asked for counsel, I would advise black women – indeed, everyone in America to work for the obliteration of those forces in our society and culture that not only frustrate black men and women, but set the sexes at odds with each other in general. As Pearl Buck has lamented, nowhere in the world are men and women so estranged as in the United States.

Race : inextricably connected with sex by Calvin C. Hernton

What does all of this mean? It means that the race problem is inextricably connected with sex. More and more in America, everything we make, sell, handle, wear, and do takes on a sexual meaning.

Calvin C. Hernton, Sex And Racism in America (1965), Anchor Books , 1992, NYC, p.3

Freud had uncovered somthing new by F. Coblence & J.-L. Donnet

According to Jones, Freud had told him that through the case of an American patient referred to him, he felt he had uncovered something new about paranoia, that he had penetrated it down to the bedrock; and it brings to mind what he had written to Ferenczi in 1910: “I have succeeded where the paranoid fails.”

Villas are all like funeral homes by Jean Baudrillard

On the aromatic hillsides of Santa Barbara, the villas are all like funeral homes. Between the gardenias and the eucalyptus trees, among the profusion of plant genuses and the monotony of the human species, lies the tragedy of a Utopian dream* made reality.

Jean Baudrillard, America, Trans. Chris Turner, Verso, 1988

* Chris Turner translated the french “utopie” into “Utopian dream”, adding the dream to the text where it wasn’t even implied. We do wonder reasons and consequences of such an addition, remembering this text started the facherie between Baudrillard and USA’s intelligentsia.

A homeland is a shared shame by Jean-Pierre Martin

The Scarlet Letter, one of the great American novels, is also one of the founding novels of America. Born in Salem, Hawthorne, haunted by the memory of his Puritan ancestors, persecutors of witches, tells us through this emigrants story how shame is founding. A homeland is a shared shame.
