The shadow of the abject has fallen on the ego by Patrick Merot

To be ashamed is, in a paradigmatic way, to be ashamed to discover oneself very small even though one has believed oneself to be great, to be reduced to being a miserable earthworm, a scum, an excretion while thought one was a man. We have sufficiently indicated the anal dimension of identity to which the subject is then reduced: the shame, it is the shadow of the abject which has fallen on the ego. A formulation in which this beyond shame we encounter in melancholy, and the melancholic dimension the experience of shame can include, is hearable.
