He thought that she was blaming herself for being a ‘bad’ woman, which shows how the early Freud had an intuition abo the existence of something he was much later to call the persecutory super ego. Freud seems to suggest that the patient was avoiding an upsetting inner judgement by ejecting it into the outer world (Verwerfung) – that is, she was projecting her upsetting ‘concrete’ inner persecution. Freud uses the expression projecting its substance.
