However, everything that the analysis of the Wolf Man individualises as a ‘constitution’ harmful to masculinity, can be reversed into a positive value, applied to femininity. And this is the explanation of the article “On the transpositions of the impulses more particularly in anal eroticism” where the penis-baby-feces equivalence is defended as illuminating the vicissitudes of normal feminine sexuality, whereas the same constellation is burdened with a heavy pathological incidence in the Wolf Man. At this point, Freud completes his psychopathology of love life by writing the Taboo of Virginity. Henceforth, the male castration complex is no longer considered only from the angle of the male impotence that results from it, but also from that of what the woman would gain as acquired power by this means by chastising the man. Thus we move from the action of the castrating father to that of the castrating woman. The father deprives without receiving anything other than the preservation of his hegemonic power; the woman, on the other hand, would appropriate what belonged to the man, which she seizes for her own benefit. The castration anxiety emanating from the father was a regulator of sexuality intended to combat its excesses in incestuous confinement. By its extension to the role of the woman (and not of the mother) the castration complex no longer regulates sexuality, it makes sexual union fearsome when it does not become impossible. The evolution of the castration complex in Freud’s work inclines more and more to insist on its narcissistic consequences (the wound inflicted on bodily integrity and self-image). It also induces a narcissistic regression (the fear of the object, the refusal of otherness, the inclination to the inversion of the Oedipus complex) that can go as far as psychosis. It is not irrelevant to note that this evolution coincides with the progressive accentuation of women penis envy in the theory.
