Trivializing humiliation : we are masking its horror by Michel Zink

The ease with which we find ourself humiliated and the ease with which we go to court to obtain redress are based on a good feeling: that of indignation at humiliation. But by using the word at all times, by seeing humiliated people everywhere, by judging ourserlves humiliated at every moment, by trivializing humiliation, we are masking its horror.

La facilité avec laquelle on se trouve humilié jointe à celle avec laquelle on saisit la justice pour en obtenir réparation partent d’un bon sentiment : celui de l’indignation devant l’humiliation. Mais en utilisant le mot à tout propos, en voyant des humiliés partout, en se jugeant soi-même humilié à chaque instant, en banalisant l’humiliation, on en masque l’horreur.

Rape, present in all armed conflicts, systematically practiced by the Red Army during the Second World War and today on an unimaginable scale in certain conflicts in Africa and by the Islamic State in the Near East, is the quintessence of humiliation. Because humiliation is linked to sexuality. It is an exposure, an aggression of the intimate. It is felt in the belly. All humiliation is a form of rape.

Le viol, présent dans tous les conflits armés, pratiqué systématiquement par l’armée rouge pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et aujourd’hui à une échelle inimaginable dans certains conflits en Afrique et par l’État islamique au Proche-Orient, est la quintessence de l’humiliation. Car l’humiliation est liée à la sexualité. Elle est une mise à nu, une agression de l’intime. Elle est ressentie dans le ventre. Toute humiliation est une forme de viol.

Humiliation is a symbolic suffering. The sign is its reality. It is so eminently a sign, and it is at the same time such a violent sign, that the suffering inflicted by this pure sign can be a physical suffering, and often is.
We are told repeatedly that “to say is to do”.
In the case of humiliation, this proposition is strictly true.

L’humiliation est une souffrance symbolique. Le signe est sa réalité. Elle est si éminemment un signe, et elle est en même temps un signe si violent, que la souffrance infligée par ce pur signe peut être une souffrance physique, et l’est souvent.
On nous répète que « dire, c’est faire ».
Dans le cas de l’humiliation, la proposition est strictement vraie.
