I have put forward a conception of shame mainly based on the idea that the most characteristic element in shame is an incoherent attitude towards responsibility. The fact that, in shame, we blame ourselves for things that do not depend on us, as if we were responsible for them, has been abundantly emphasized, illustrated and criticized. There is probably not a single study of shame where the author forgets to give some comical examples. One can be ashamed of being too short, too fat, too hairy, of having received a flowerpot on the head by coincidence, of having been assaulted by a drunkard, of having a father who sings in the shower, etc.
