The time of puberty is always a moment of crisis to the man, a time when he feels something foreign penetrating into his own being, something which is added to what was until then his way of thinking and feeling, without having ever wanted to. It is the physiological erection, over which the will has no power; and this is why the first erection in every man is experienced as something incomprehensible and disturbing, and the reason also so many men remember its circumstances throughout their lives with the greatest precision. Woman, on the contrary, not only easily resigns herself to puberty, but feels, so to speak, her being raised by her to a higher power, her importance as a person infinitely increased.
