Here is a part of the function of the Real in its convergence with the maternal body that is not thematizable in Lacanian discourse. The Real is what resists and constrains symbolization. While in Lacanian doctrine the «Real» is defined as unrepresentable, and the spectrum of its unrepresentability is the psychosis’s one, Kristeva rewrites and reinterprets this exterior «of the symbolic» as semiotics, as a poetic mode of signification which, although depending on the symbolic, can neither be reduced to it, nor be represented as its non-thematizable Other.
