Phallus marks what the Other desires by Jacques Lacan

Most of what I’ve brought you by describing the function of the phallus, is that the phallus is this signifer which marks what the Other desires, as himself, as a real Other, a human Other, he is, in his self-being economy, marked by the signifier. […] Precisely; this is to the extent that the Other is marked by the signifier that the subject can – and can only by, through this Other – recognize that he is marked too by the signifier, that is to say : there is always something that remains beyond what can be satisfied through the signifier, which means through the demand.

L’essentiel de ce que je vous ai apporté en vous décrivant la fonction du phallus, c’est qu’il est ce signifiant qui marque ce que l’Autre désire en tant que lui-même, comme Autre réel, Autre humain, il est dans son économie d’être marqué par le signifiant. […] C’est précisément dans la mesure où l’Autre est marqué par le signifiant que le sujet peut – et ne peut que par là, par l’intermédiaire de cet Autre – reconnaître que lui aussi est marqué par le signifiant, c’est-à-dire qu’il y a toujours quelque chose qui reste au-delà de ce qui peut se satisfaire par l’intermédiaire du signifiant, c’est-à-dire par la demande.

The addiction organizes a sort of the inner sensitivity revolution, starting from this inflection of resistance to displeasure – which, as we feel, deals with the frustration’s intolerance.

L’intoxication organise une sorte de révolution intérieure de la sensibilité, à partir de cette inflexion de la résistance au déplaisir – dont on sent qu’elle a à voir avec l’intolérance à la frustration.
